Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure performed to treat hair loss or baldness. It involves the transplantation of hair follicles from a donor area, typically the back or sides of the scalp where hair is genetically resistant to balding (known as the donor site), to the balding or thinning areas of the scalp (known as the recipient site).
There are two primary techniques used in hair transplantation:
- Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): Also known as the strip method, FUT involves removing a strip of scalp from the donor area and then dissecting it into individual follicular units under a microscope. These follicular units are then transplanted into the recipient site.
- Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): FUE involves harvesting individual follicular units directly from the donor area using a small punch-like instrument. The follicular units are then transplanted into the recipient site. FUE does not require a linear incision and leaves tiny, dot-like scars that are less noticeable than the linear scar produced by FUT.
Both FUT and FUE have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between the two depends on factors such as the patient’s preferences, the extent of hair loss, the quality of donor hair, and the skill and experience of the surgeon.
Hair transplantation is typically performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The procedure can take several hours to complete, depending on the number of grafts being transplanted. After the surgery, patients may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, but these symptoms usually subside within a few days to a week.
