Hair transplant surgery is a procedure that involves moving hair follicles from one part of the body (usually the back or sides of the scalp where hair is thicker) to areas where hair is thinning or balding. This surgical technique is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness but can also be used to restore hair growth in other areas such as eyebrows, eyelashes, beard, and chest hair.

There are two main techniques used in hair transplantation:

  1. Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): Also known as strip harvesting, FUT involves removing a strip of scalp tissue from the donor area, typically the back or sides of the head, and then dissecting it into individual follicular units under a microscope. These follicular units are then transplanted into the recipient area where hair is thinning or balding.
  2. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): FUE involves individually extracting follicular units directly from the donor area using a small punch tool and then implanting them into the recipient area. This technique leaves tiny scars that are less noticeable compared to the linear scar left by FUT.

Both FUT and FUE have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice between the two depends on factors such as the patient’s hair type, scalp condition, and personal preferences.

Hair transplant surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. The procedure can take several hours to complete, depending on the extent of the hair loss and the number of grafts being transplanted.

After the surgery, patients may experience some temporary discomfort, swelling, and redness in the scalp, which usually subsides within a few days to a week. The transplanted hair may fall out within the first few weeks after the procedure, but new hair growth should start to become visible within a few months.

It’s important for patients to have realistic expectations about the results of hair transplant surgery. While it can significantly improve the appearance of thinning or balding areas, it may not completely restore a full head of hair, and additional sessions may be needed to achieve the desired density.
